Coster Diamond Merchants - Amsterdam

Coster Diamonds, Amsterdam's most famous firm of diamond merchants, is situated near the Rijksmuseum. Ever since 1840 diamonds have been cut, polished and, of course, sold on this very spot. In the reception hall you can marvel at an excellent replica of the English crown. A guided tour will reveal the mysteries of the magic that transforms diamonds from unhewn rocks into sparkling crystal fire.

Westertoren - Amsterdam
The seventeenth-century Westerkerk with its enormous nave is certainly worth a visit. The chimes of an exceptionally fine carillon float down from the bell tower, which is the highest in the city and adorned with the imperial crown of the Emperor Maximilian. The tower also offers a magnificent view of the canals. Though the interior of the church is simple, the organ shutters are beautifully painted and the candles in the chandeliers radiate a unique atmosphere. Another interesting detail: Rembrandt lies buried in this church but no-one knows exactly where.

Concertgebouw - Amsterdam

A resplendent facade with illustrious columns that opens into the plush neo-renaissance world of Amsterdam's concert hall. A showcase of red velvet and nearly flawless acoustics for the city's famous Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. When the building was structurally re-enforced with new piles during the eighties, part of it had to be lifted. Even the briefest glance at its colossal size would show the task to be anything but easy. All the same, the operation succeeded. And to top off the renovations, a new glass casing was added to the building. The result: an extraordinary blend of antiquity and modernity. The two concert halls were also refurbished and now stand in all of their former glory, ready to entertain audiences.

Gouden Bocht - Amsterdam

The Gouden Bocht (golden bend) lies on the Herengracht, where wealthy merchants and ship builders built magnificent mansions during the seventeenth century. Highly ornate facades and window adornments testify to the caliber of the architects: none but the best were thought to suffice! Although today, most of the buildings accommodate banks, offices and consulates, every elaborate inch of this extraordinary section of Amsterdam has retained its former grandeur.
